ODC — over dimensional cargo
Over Dimensional Cargo is any load that goes beyond the standard dimensions or permissible weight for the vehicle carrying it. In practice it means the movement cannot simply be booked and driven: the route has to be worked out and permissions obtained before anything moves.
The planning matters as much as the trailer. Road width and turning radius, bridge load limits, gradients, and overhead cables and clearances all decide whether a given route is usable — and the answer is sometimes a longer way round.
We carry these loads. The photographs on this page are our own trailers with plant sections, vessels and long steel on them.

When you need this trailer
-
Plant and crusher sections
Processing plant frequently exceeds standard width or height in one or more directions once it is on a deck. These are the loads where the route decides as much as the trailer does.
-
Long vessels and fabricated assemblies
Vessels and fabricated items are often over-length rather than over-weight. Overhang has to be marked correctly and, past a point, needs permission before the vehicle moves.
-
Tall self-propelled plant
A machine that is within weight but over height is still an ODC movement. Deck height is what decides whether it clears structures on the route at all.
-
Long steel and pipe
Structural sections and large-diameter pipe run over-length regularly. Handled routinely, but still planned rather than assumed.
Specifications
Specifications on request. Deck length, deck height and payload vary between vehicles, and the figure that matters depends on your cargo. Call us with the load and we will give you the exact dimensions of the vehicle we would send.
What we will ask when you call
- Where it is loading and where it is going.
- What the cargo is and roughly what it weighs.
- Its dimensions — especially height.
- How it will be loaded: crane, forklift, or driven on.
- When you need it.
If you do not know all of it yet, call anyway. We would rather start the conversation than wait for a complete spec.
FAQ
Questions about this trailer
What counts as ODC?
ODC stands for Over Dimensional Cargo, also written as an Over Dimensional Consignment. It is a load that exceeds the standard dimensions or the permissible weight set out in the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. The exact thresholds depend on the vehicle and the configuration, so whether your load is ODC is confirmed against the specific trailer rather than guessed from a general figure.
Do ODC movements need a permit?
Over dimensional and overweight movements need permission, and what is required depends on the dimensions, the route and the states crossed. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways operates an online permit route for certain single-unit over dimensional and overweight consignments on National Highways. We will tell you what your particular movement needs rather than quote a blanket answer.
What do you need from me for an ODC enquiry?
The loaded length, width and height, the weight, and both locations. Height is usually the figure that decides everything. Photographs of the item help more than people expect.
How long does an ODC movement take to arrange?
Longer than a standard load, because the route has to be checked and permissions obtained. Tell us early rather than close to the date — on ODC, notice is worth more than anything else.
Tell us about the load
Enquiries welcome any day. Calling is quickest — tell us the load and we can usually say straight away whether we have a vehicle for it.
